Dr. van Setten studied general medicine 1980-1987 at the University of Bonn, Germany. In 1983 he began to study the effects of Nd: YAG laser in the anterior segment of the eye. He finished theses studies with his first thesis entlitled “YAG laser use in the anterior segment of the eye”. After this, he continued studies on the anterior segment of the eye at the University Eye Clinic, Helsinki, Finland, where he defended in 1991 his second thesis 1991, entitled “Epidermal growth factor, plasmin,& plasminogen activator in tear fluid”. He worked at the University of Helsinki , Finland. Then followed Post Doc studies at the Institute of Wound Research at the Dept. of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Univ.Florida, USA.

Since 1993, Dr. van Setten is working at the St Eriks Eye Clinic & Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden. He is a specialist in ophthalmology, senior anterior segment surgeon, Assistant Professor (Docent) of Clinical Ophthalmology. He has also been Guest Professor at CNRS, Paris, France and repeatedly lector at Karolinska Institutet. He is also affiliated with the University of Florida, USA. Dr. van Setten has identified and studied Epidermal growth factor and enzymatic activity in tears and ocular fluids already in the mid 80’s. He is active in various research projects and owns own patents.

The focus of his research is Dry Eye Disease, Cataract, Glaucoma and wound healing. He has published over 80 peer-reviewed papers and has presented at more than 100 abstracts. He holds several patents; amongst others a patent for an IOL model for patients with macular degeneration. Most recently he introduced the concept of osmokinetics in dry eye disease and illustrated the importance of the anatomical eye and sandbankepitheliopathy.
