Abstract ID: 24-179
Comparisons of pre-ocular tear film quality before and after non-contact tonometry
Daniel Dinarvand
Purpose
To determine whether NCT has any adverse effects on pre-ocular tear film quality
Methods
This study employed a case-control approach, involving 20 test subjects and 10 control subjects. In both groups, the participants’ intraocular pressure, corneal fluorescein tear breakup time (RBUT), and tear breakup time (TBUT) were measured.
The current study focused on participants with normal vision and no history of ocular impairment. Moreover, participants were selected only after demonstrating clinically normal tear film. Prior to inclusion, participants completed the McMonnies Dry Eye Questionnaire (McMonnies, 1987). Additionally, participants underwent initial examinations of the anterior eye, lid margins, and lid eversion using a slit lamp biomicroscope.
Results
The study results identify that there is no difference in the RBUT and TBUT measurements between case-control subjects. From the pre and post NCT measurements of RBUT and TBUT using paired t-test no significant changes were observed.
Conclusion
This study demonstrates that NCT does not affect TBUT and RBUT, indicating no immediate impact on tear film stability. These findings provide valuable reassurance regarding the safety and compatibility of NCT with ocular surface health. Further research is warranted to explore the long-term effects of NCT on tear film dynamics and to validate these findings in larger and more diverse patient populations. Nevertheless, based on the results of this study, NCT remains a viable option for accurate and non-invasive intraocular pressure measurement in clinical settings.
