WSOPRAS starting this week

As President of ISD-DE I have been invited to give a Keynote lecture at WSOPRAS in Dubai on “Lacrimal Surgery: A changing Landscape”. In it I will relate the future direction for oculoplastic lacrimal surgeon looking after tearing patients. We will not just be looking after the end stage disease of complete nasolacrimal duct (NLD) obstruction by dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR), but instead will become more focussed on the pathophysiology and prevention of tearing from lacrimal outflow stenosis (LOS). This includes new ways of assessing the tearing patient and new approaches with medical, light and surgical treatment. We are increasingly recognising the overlap of meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) with “eye oily gland blockages” and ocular surface inflammation (OSI), and degrees of NLD stenosis, LOS. We recognise the importance of early identification and treatment of the inflamed ocular surface and nasal mucosal, in order to prevent later presentation with severe disease, such as dacryocystitis.
